MUZ happy with KCM
The Mine Workers Union of Zambia MUZ says it s happy that Konkola Copper Mines KCM is not scaling down its operations in Zambia.
MUZ says the latest reassurance by KCM that it is not scaling down its operations at its Nchanga underground mine will secure Hundreds of jobs.
MUZ General Secretary Joseph Chewe has told ZNBC News in an interview that the latest reassurance means that over 16 thousand jobs at one of Zambia’s largest mines are secure.
Yesterday, unions in the mining sector reacted angrily following assertions that KCM had plans to scale down its operations in Chingola.
The allegations linked to an unofficial memo circulating within KCM purporting that Nchanga Underground Mine was to be placed under care and maintenance.
But, KCM Spokesperson Shapi Sachinda says operations at KCM have continued and that production is continuing.
And Mines Minister Christopher Yaluma last evening dismissed reports that KCM- has placed its Nchanga Underground Mine Operations under care and maintenance.
Mr. Yaluma told ZNBC news in an interview that he has been in talks with KCM management and that they have denied taking such action.
He says he has also been in talks with ZESCO who have also assured him that no power will be reduced to the Mines.
