Mopani, Unions to meet
Mopani Copper mines has invited all Mine unions to a meeting on Monday next week.
And Mine Unions on the Copperbelt have requested for a meeting with President Edgar Lungu to discuss issues affecting the mining sector and the looming job losses amid the slump in commodity prices.
This follows the suspension of operations at Balumba mine, leaving over 1 600 miners in limbo while Glencoe the owners of Mopani Coppers mines have also announced plans to suspend operations in Zambia for 18 months due to a slump in commodity prices on the international market.
Speaking at a joint press briefing in Kitwe Mine workers of Union Zambia President Nkole Chishimba said there is need for President Lungu to help put a stop to the laying off of mine workers.
