Brail ballots welcomed
The Kitwe District Association for Persons with Disabilities has commended the Electoral Commission -ECZ for its decision to produce Braille ballot papers for the blind during the August 11 general elections.
Association Deputy Secretary General Sefelino Bwalya says the move by ECZ to consider the plight of the visually impaired is commendable.
Mr. Bwalya has told ZNBC News in Kitwe today that the brail template will allow blind people to vote for candidates of their choice unlike in the old system where they were assisted to vote.
He has however appealed to the government to educate the blind countrywide about the new system of voting.
Appearing on ZNBC’s Kwacha Good Morning programme this morning, ECZ Spokesperson Chris Akufuna said that Braille ballot papers will be provided in all polling stations this year.
Mr. Akufuna said the move is aimed at allowing the blind to have a say in the elections following repeated requests by stakeholders.
