Five Bangladeshis nabbed
Five Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested by the immigration Department in Livingstone for entering Zambia illegally. The five are alleged to have entered the country with the help of a man linked to a cartel involved in human trafficking.
Immigration spokesperson, Mulako Mbangweta, however says it may be difficult to link the suspects to the human trafficking ring because the master-mind has vanished.
Ms. Mbangweta says the man who was organizing the movements for the alleged illegal immigrants is believed to be from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
She told ZNBC News that the five suspects who were picked up on Tuesday night at a lodge in Livingstone, are detained at Libuyu Police Station.
Ms. Mbangweta said it is sad that some Zambians have found it profitable to join the human trafficking business by harbouring illegal immigrants.
She said human traffickers are using Zambia as a transit point to ferry young people from poor families to South Africa ahead of the 2010 World Cup finals in that country.
Ms. Mbangweta said the teenagers are promised jobs but some end up as sex workers.
