UN recognises Zambia
The United Nations has recognized Zambia’s success in fighting malaria.UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon says preliminary analysis suggests that Zambia has achieved the 2010 target in fighting the disease.
Mr. Moon said Zambia now joins six other African countries to reach the 2010 target of fighting malaria by 2008.
He said this in a report on the 2001-2010 decade to roll back malaria in developing countries, particularly in Africa.
The report was released on 0ctober 20 ahead of the UN General Assembly debate on malaria.
This is according to a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today by First Secretary for Press at the Permanent Mission of Zambia to the UN, MOSES WALUBITA.
Other countries that have reached the target are Sao Tome and Principe, Eritrea, Gambia, Rwanda, and Zanzibar.
Mr. Moon said Zambia, Gambia and Rwanda reached the target owing to coverage of insecticide-treated nets and improved access to treatment.
And Director for Development Cooperation and International Organization in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mrs. Anne Mtamboh, said the under five mortality rate in Zambia has improved from 168 per 1,000 live births to 119 per 1,000 live births.
