One thousand five hundred and eighty-nine students from Copperbelt University, have been awarded loans for the 2018 – 2019 academic year.
Ministry of Higher Education, Loan and scholarships Acting Director Ireen Chirwa says the students who are from River Side Campus in Kitwe and Michael Chilufya Sata campus in Ndola reported last week on Monday.
Mrs. Chirwa explained that the criterion that was used to give loans was based on 40 percent merit for best performance of students who got 5 to 6 points in five subjects.
She says the other criteria were 30 percent for those coming from rural areas and that 60 percent were on gender affirmative for the vulnerable in rural areas.
Mrs. Chirwa has told ZNBC News in a telephone interview that this is contrary to insinuations on social media that the Ministry gave out loans to students who got 5 to 6 points.
She has further explained that the Ministry of Higher Education has received an admission list from the University of Zambia and Kapasa Makasa University for the 2018- 2019 academic year.
She says for 2018 – 2019, the ministry is including other institutions as determined by the board.
