Authorities in Nakonde have secured the release of 17 Zambians who were arrested in TANZANIA for allegedly stealing from shops and shoppers.
Nakonde District Commissioner Field Simwinga has confirmed the development in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services -ZANIS- in Nakonde.
Mr. Simwinga said the arrest of the Zambians sparked protests among youths in Nakonde who demanded for their release.
He said the youths blocked Tanzanian vehicles and nationals from crossing into Zambia, prompting authorities to close the border for two hours.
Police in full riot gear from both Zambia and Tanzania responded to the protests with Zambia Police service officers firing tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters.
Mr. Simwinga said normal operations have since resumed and has since advised Zambians doing business in Tanzania to ensure they follow the law.
