Chief Zumwanda of the Chewa people in Lumezi district – Eastern Province is concerned with the small-scale miners in his chiefdom who are not burying the mining pits after the extraction of minerals.
The traditional leader says many small-scale miners have destroyed his chiefdom by leaving many open pits which he says are not environmentally friendly.
He said this when ministry of mines and minerals development director of planning Bernadatte Mwakacheya paid a courtesy call on him at his palace before proceeding to inspect some small-scale mining operations in the district.
This is part of the ministry’s study of finding out the potential of small-scale mining in diversification and job creation for the locals.
Mrs. Mwakacheya however revealed that illegal mining has contributed to the many unburied mining pits in the country because they are not registered and are not monitored by the ministry.
