Police on the Copperbelt have intercepted and impounded 4 trucks laden with about 3-thousand bags of mealie meal believed to have been smuggled enroute to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga says nine suspects have since been detained at Kitwe Central police station for assembling with intent to smuggle.
Ms. Katanga has named the suspects as Mukuka Mutale, 29 of Masala Ndola, Chomba Nkokola 28 of Lubengele in Chililabombwe, Emmauel Kabala, 48 of Lubengele in Chililabombwe, Kelvin Chisha 30 of Simulungushi in Chingola and Andrew Mpashi, 25 of Kasumbalesa.
Others are David Phiri, 36 of Chiwala in Chingola, Mulenga Alinani, 17 of
Kamba Drive in Chingola, Proud Musonda and Kent Muonga also from
She told ZNBC News in a statement that one of the suspects Kent Muonga, driving a Toyota Allion and was found with 60 thousand Kwacha and a black NINE-millimeter pistol.
Ms Katanga said the suspects were apprehended after the police mounted a check point to prevent the smuggling of mealie meal into the DRC.
