Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo says the HIV/AIDS disease burden in correctional facilities has reduced following interventions by government and cooperating partners.
The Minister of Home Affairs has added that the right to health care for inmates is not an option as the Zambia Correctional Service undergoes transformation.
Mr. Kampyongo says it is for this reason that government has continued providing financial support to the Zambia Correctional Service to run its health programs.
He said this in a speech read on his behalf by Southern Province Permanent Secretary Liomba Mwangala during the World AIDS day build up activities held at the Katombora Reformatory School in Kazungula District.
And Zambia Correctional Service, Commissioner General Chisela Chileshe has noted that there is need to evaluate and determine the current HIV prevalence rate in prisons in the country.
In a speech read on his behalf by Deputy Commissioner General Lloyd Chilundika, Dr. Chileshe has said there has been a lot of speculation on the HIV prevalence rate in prisons when the last evaluation was done in 2009.
