Government has suspended mining licenses in some parts of Eastern Province in a quest to address illegal gold mining.
Speaking during a media briefing Minister of Mines Christopher Yaluma said there are confirmed reports of illegal gold mining in Nyimba, Vubwi and Lwano, Petauke and Rufunsa.
Mr. Yaluma says illegal gold mining has deprived government of revenue in mineral royalty.
He said government has further resolved that no new licenses will be given to anyone wanting to conduct mining businesses in the stipulated areas.
He adds that the ministry has since sent experts into the affected areas to examine the extent at which the mineral has been mined.
