Government says it is targeting livestock structures located at all show grounds countrywide as premises to conduct provincial and national month end fish and livestock market days.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Kampamba Chewe says the availability and use of the structures will ensure sustainability in the marketing of fish and livestock for small holder farmers who lack specialised and reliable markets for their produce.
Ms. Chewe says currently the country has only two reliable markets at Chibolya in Lusaka and Kasumbalesa border post on the copperbelt and government will not hesitate to partner with the private sector to build a robust marketing system across the country.
Ms. Chewe adds that the livestock structures will be transformed into goat and sheep assembling and screening centers for livestock destined for export to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other countries.
And, Musika board chairperson Chance Kabaghe said his organisation has invested over 45 Million Dollars in private capital in the smallholders through its agricultural market development programme.
Meanwhile President of the Agricultural and Commercial Show Society of Zambia Caroline Silwamba said the introduction of livestock month end market days will result in a large participation of fisheries and livestock sector at this year’s show.
