President Edgar Lungu says government is in the process of recruiting about 750 extension service officers in the Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock.
President Lungu says extension service officers will not only provide information on farming methods or techniques but also market the products in the agriculture and livestock sectors.
He said this when he addressed farmers in Chisamba district.
And President Lungu said there is need to reduce and bring favourable bank interests rates so that more farmers are encouraged to invest and grow the sector.
He said he will task the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Zambia to ensure that banks devise products that will support farmers in the country.
The Head of State has also called on farmers to diversify their crops from maize to other cash crops.
He said government is committed to growing the agriculture sector and will continue to put incentives to make it a viable business.
And Minister of Livestock Michael Katambo said 500 extension workers will be deployed to the Ministry of Agriculture while 250 will be enlisted under his Ministry.
Meanwhile, Central Province Minister Sydney Mushanga has thanked President Lungu for visiting the province to check on various projects.
