Vice President Inonge Wina says the various programmes being implemented in line ministries are giving renewed impetus towards the empowerment of women.
ZNBC’s staffer Kennedy Bwalwa reports that Mrs. Wina has cited programmes under the Ministries of Agriculture, Livestock, Gender and Community Development among government initiatives that are uplifting the welfare of women and the girl child.
She says Zambia is a on the right path to achieving the desired goals in women empowerment especially targeting those living in rural areas.
Mrs. Wina was speaking soon after arrival at New York Palace Hotel, ahead of the 62nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women-CSW- meeting which opens tomorrow, at the United Nations Headquarters.
She said government is highly expectant of the CSW meeting as it provides a platform for sharing experiences in the quest to promoting women issues and gender equality.
Mrs. Wina said the Zambian delegation will learn best practices in efforts towards achieving gender equality and women empowerment.
And Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Lazarous Kapambwe said the African group is looking up to Mrs. Wina and her delegation to provide the necessary leadership on behalf of the continent.
Mrs. Wina is accompanied by her Senior Private Secretary Sheila Siwela and Minister of Community Development Emerine Kabanshi along with senior government officials from line Ministries.
Meanwhile, a busy schedule awaits the Vice President at the CSW, with scheduled bilateral meetings with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the President of the World Bank.
Mrs. Wina will also address high level sessions of the CSW and several scheduled side events.
