Government has declared null and void the decision by Lusaka Mayor Miles Sampa to appoint a Councillor to act in his position.
Local Government Permanent Secretary Amos Malupenga says the decision is illegal and against the local government Act.
Mr. Malupenga notes that even if the Deputy Mayor Chilando Chitangala was out or incapable of discharging her duties the Mayor has no authority to appoint an Acting Mayor.
He says in such a scenario; the law provides that the councillors call for a special council meeting to elect an acting mayor from amongst themselves.
Mr. Malupenga has since advised all Mayors and Council Chairpersons across the country to always consult to avoid such occurrences.
Mr. Malupenga who was flanked by Attorney General Likando Kalaluka, was speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka.
