Minister of Finance Felix Mutati says the misuse of funds allocated to the Ministry of General Education is hampering the provision of quality education.
Mr Mutati has observed that it is difficult to have a good path to education if misuse of funds in the Ministry of General Education is NOT curtailed.
He says while four accountants have been suspended in the Ministries of General Education and Finance, more still needs to be done to deal with erring officers.
Mr. Mutati says the situation is embarrassing especially that cooperating partners are giving government money meant for the poor which ends up being misused.
He said this during the launch of the report on the evaluation of the Public Financial Management System of Zambia in Lusaka.
The Minister noted that budget execution has remained a huge weakness as officers use funds on workshops and travels.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mutati said Zambia has one of the lowest debt levels in the region at 50.4 percent of Gross Domestic Product-GDP despite being closer to the 56 percent unsustainable levels.
He said most countries’ debt levels range from 58 percent through to around 80 percent.
And the Minister has disputed reports suggesting that Zambia’s talks with the IMF for a bailout package have stalled.
