Tobacco Farmers in the country says the enactment of Statutory Instruments-SI No 84 and 85 of 2018 of the laws of Zambia, on the sale of Non Actionable tobacco will boost the performance of industry in the country.
Speaking during a press briefing held in Lusaka today, Tobacco Farmers Representative Chishala Chilufya says the coming of the new law will provide a level playing ground for the tobacco business to thrive in the SADC region.
He says the SI will promote self – financing and economic independence between the Merchants and Self sponsored tobacco growers in Zambia.
Mr. Chilufya says the industry, has immense potential to add to the match needed Government revenue and has implored stakeholders to put in place incentives that will track investment in the business.
He says famers are grateful that Government through the Ministry of Agricultures and the Tobacco Board of Zambia has come to the aid of famers and traders in the industry.
He says further says the SI will stimulate the country’s economy by adding to the Gross Domestic Product- GDP like seen in other countries that are thriving through tobacco trade and exportation.
Mr. Chilufya says with the country’s vast land and human capital the target is to reach a 1 hundred 50 kilograms of tobacco sales by 2030.
