CHIEF MUSHOTA CALLS FOR VOTER REGISTRATION EXTENSION
By Prince Chiyuni
Senior Chief Mushota of the Chishinga people of Kawambwa district is concerned with the time given for the voter registration exercise.
The traditional leader says the time given for each centre is not enough to capture all eligible voters.
Senior Chief Mushota has appealed to the Electoral Commission of Zambia-ECZ- to consider extending the working hours to help more people to register.
He added that extending the working hours for voter registration will give people in rural areas enough time to register after coming from their fields.
Senior Chief Mushota was speaking when Pambashe Member of Parliament Ronald Chitotela paid a courtesy call on him at his palace in Kawambwa district.
And Mr. Chitotela, who is also Tourism and Arts Minister informed the traditional leader that consultations are going on with ECZ on possibility of extending working hours.
Mr. Chitotela added that he is equally concerned that many people might be disfranchised if measures to improve operations are not quickly implemented.
He however informed the traditional leader that ECZ has announced recruitment of more staff to help those that are already in the field.
Meanwhile, Mr. Chitotela says the restocking of wild animals in Lusenga national park in Kawambwa district will start this week.
He informed Senior Chief Mushota that government will put strict measures to ensure that there is no illegal poaching once the park is restocked.
Mr. Chitotela further says all people that live and cultivate near Lusenga national park have been directed to leave with immediate effect or face the wrath of the law.
