Domestic tourism key to sector growth
Wilson Mulinda-Tourism Minister RODNEY SIKUMBA says Government has taken a clear stance to promote domestic tourism in it’s quest to grow the economy.
Mr. SIKUMBA says domestic tourism is a force for positive change because it is sustainable and resilient from external shocks such as COVID 19.
He says Government is pushing an agenda to allow the private sector and individuals to participate in domestic tourism for the benefit of the country.
Mr. SIKUMBA adds that domestic tourism has allowed the growth of the artisanal sector, while sustaining livelihoods of Zambians working in the tourism sector.
The Minister was speaking during the opening of the Chena Sprint for impact, a 20 week water Sprint competition that has attracted about 16 participating companies in Lusaka.
He said the event is also a celebration of the country’s culture using locally dug out canoes.
Mr. SIKUMBA challenged the organizers of the competition to ensure that it stands the test of time because it was founded on the pillars of tourism, sustainable growth and creativity.
He said Government’s long term vision for the tourism sector is to ensure that Zambia becomes a major tourism destination of choice with unique features that contribute to sustainable economic growth.
