The Energy Regulation Board -ERB- has dispelled rumours circulating on social media suggesting that a decision has been made to increase electricity tariffs and fuel prices by 15 and 20 percent respectively after the General election.
ERB Public Relations Manager Kwali Mfuni says the board is concerned with such reports because they have potential to cause alarm among members of the public.
Ms. Mfuni told ZNBC News in a statement that such rumours are unfounded because there is no price review currently under consideration for either fuel or electricity.
She said the electricity utility must apply to the ERB and place intentions in the media before any adjustment is considered.
Ms. Mfuni said fuel prices can only be adjusted upon the ERB undertaking a costs assessment, which is based on an applicable price model.
She has since urged the public to disregard the rumours and only trust statements issued by authorities.
