Hailstorm destroys Solwezi school infrastructure
ZANIS—A civil leader in Kabompo District is appealing to government through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to come to the aid of Chikonkwelo day Secondary School whose one by two classroom block was blown off by hailstorm.
Chikonkwelo ward Councilor Reuben Kambeu told ZANIS in a telephone interview in Solwezi today that the one by two classroom block which was being constructed by the parent-teacher initiative was completely destroyed by hailstorm following heavy rains the area had experienced.
“We have been experiencing heavy rains in the recent past and this has destroyed the only 1×2 classroom block which was being constructed by the community, all iron sheets and building material have been damaged costing over K70, 000,” he said.
Mr Kambeu said the DMMU through the office of the District Education Board Secretary must quickly come on board to assess the extent of the damage and assist with the reconstruction of the structure.
He said pupils from grade nine to 12 are still learning in churches since last year due to lack of learning space.
Mr Kambeu has since thanked government for sending 10 teachers to the school and appealed for the construction of more classroom blocks and teachers houses.
Chikonkwelo was declared a day secondary school by government last year in 2019.
