Justice Minister MULAMBO HAIMBE has called for the amendment of the Waste Management Act to make recycling mandatory.
Mr. HAIMBE says recycling is the only way Zambia will be able to manage its waste.
He says the issue of landfills is not sustainable in the management of waste.
Mr. HAIMBE has regretted that Lusaka is grappling with issues of garbage and described the situation as shameful.
The minister spoke last night during a fundraising dinner which was aimed at raising resources to buy skip bins in the Central Business District of Lusaka.
And Zero Waste Organising Chief Executive Officer LANGIZYA MASENGU -SHIMBA said Parliament should enact laws that would ensure total ban on plastics for the country to successfully manage its waste .
She said her organization has embarked on a project dubbed “buy and brand skip bins” which will see the CBD given skip bins to reduce challenges of uncollected garbage.
