KASABA BAY TO BE A HERITAGE SITE
By Mwila Nsofu- The Ministry of Tourism will expedite efforts to declare the Kasaba Bay, in the Nsumbu National Park, in Northern Province a heritage site.
Tourism and Arts Permanent Secretary Patrick Lungu says the infrastructure which First Republican President, Kenneth Kaunda used, such as the Chimpusa, needs to be restored.
He says the infrastructure is important as it holds important memories of the meetings held by leaders of the frontline states back in the 1980s.
Speaking when he visited the Kasaba Bay, Mr. Lungu also recalled that the Kasaba Bay is the last place where Mozambique’s first President Samora Marchel was last seen, which is a key selling point to tourists, not only from Zambia but in Africa.
Meanwhile, Mr. Lungu said Government is elated with the support of Frankfurt Zoological Society to protect and restore the Nsumbu National Park.
He said the translocation of animals to the Park will be supported so that Nsumbu National Park can retain its past glory of being the tourist destination of choice.
And, Assistant Director Planning, National Parks and Wildlife Christopher Kaoma said there are proposals to develop various infrastructure at Kasaba Bay.
Mr. Kaoma said part of the proposals include construction of a 5,000 seater capacity Conference Centre and other vital infrastructure that can in turn boost tourism in the area.
Meanwhile, Northern Region Senior Warden, Luckson Ng’andu said the illegal activities in the NSUMBU National Park have been suppressed.
Mr. Ng’andu said the Park is in the process of re-introducing buffaloes, Zebras as well as the cats.
He also said because of the support from the Frankfurt Zoological Society, the community has been supportive and are volunteering illegal firearms.
