Maintain High Standards of Hygiene – Banda
Local Government Minister Charles Banda has implored marketeers in the country to observe high standards of hygiene in the markets.
Dr Banda says markets are critical establishments in avoiding the spread of diseases such Corinavirus and Cholera because they are food distribution points.
He says cleanliness is first priority is avoiding waterborne diseases.
Dr Banda was speaking when he led stakeholders in cleaning Chainda and UNIP markets in Lusaka’s Chainda Ward .
He reminded marketeers that they spend most of their time in the markets hence the need to keep markets clean.
And Dr Banda said in the wake of Coronavirus pandemic market authorities and marketers should ensure that handwashing facilities are placed at all entrances to markets to enable shoppers and marketeers wash their hands before handling food.
And speaking earlier, Chainda Ward Councillor, Dorcas Moyo said the Minister’s presence motivated everyone to participate in the cleaning and that it symbolises the importance government attaches to the prevention of the spread of Corinavirus and other diseases.
Ms Moyo appealed to residents not to wait for Ministers and other external stakeholders to come and remind them to clean their surroundings.
Other stakeholders who participated in today’s cleaning exercise were the Minister in the Office of the Vice President Olipa Phiri, Mtendere Ward Councillor Watson Mtonga and Lusaka Town Clerk Alex Mwansa.
