OVER 2.7 MILLION VOTERS CAPTURED IN PHASE ONE
The Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- has registered over 2.7-million voters in the ongoing mobile voter registration exercise.
Of the figure, over 1.5 million voters were registered in the second phase of the registration exercise that ended on Tuesday this week.
This marks a 44 percent improvement in the registration process as 1.1 million voters were registered in the first phase.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer PATRICK NSHINDANO has disclosed this at a press briefing in Lusaka today.
Mr. NSHINDANO said the commission has made tremendous progress in the registration of voters.
He said the turn out for voter registration is overwhelming.
Meanwhile, Mr. NSHINDANO said currently, the regional statistics of registered voters are not final.
He said the statistics regionally will be tallied later as people are eligible to register anywhere but vote in their localities.
On the other hand, Mr. NSHINDANO said the ECZ has put in place mechanisms to detect those that might attempt to register more than once.
He warned unscrupulous people who are seeking to register as voters more than once that they risk facing the full wrath of the law.
The mobile voter registration exercise that started on November 9, is earmarked to end on December 12, 2020.
The ECZ targets to register nine million voters in the exercise.
