By Paul Shalala
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is targeting to empower people living with disabilities with 1-hundred and 26 thousand chickens.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Nkandu Luo says the chickens are being handed over alongside goats, cattle and rabbits to help the disabled as startup capital.
Speaking when she handed over 20 chickens to the Chitila Blind Center in Mungwi District, Northern Province, Professor Luo said the empowerment is meant to help them start earning extra income.
Professor Luo said government realizes that people with disability face many challenges hence the need to empower them.
And Malole Member of Parliament Christopher Yaluma said the empowerment program by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock will benefit disabled people in Chitila, Chimba and Kayambi.
Mr. Yaluma, who is also Commerce Minister, said the chickens and goats will work as a revolving fund which will be passed on from one family to the other.
Meanwhile, Chitila Association of the Blind President Abraham Mwenya thanked government for empowering his organisation with 20 chickens.
