“SELECT EXPERIENCED CANDIDATES”
By Mary Kachepa – The Political Science Association of Zambia -PSAZ- has urged political parties to select experienced candidates for parliamentary elections.
PSAZ President Joe Ndambwa says selecting experienced candidates will ensure legislative stability and internal party cohesion in the next parliamentary session.
Mr. Ndambwa says political parties should avoid making wholesome changes to the legislature and experienced MPs, especially those in the first term must be retained to ensure continuity and stability in the house.
He says the Association believes that parliament is the anchor of political stability, necessary for sustainable democracy and economic development which is why replacing a huge contingent of experienced legislators will be a drawback.
Mr. Ndambwa has told ZNBC News in a statement that only a few new entrants must go to parliament in each general election.
Mr. Ndambwa however said whilst it is important to unseat and replace unfit representatives in the legislature, existing lawmakers, overtime, have matured in the manner of legislative research, parliamentary scrutiny, debate and providing oversight.
