TEACHERS ASK FOR IMPROVED CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
By Moombe Hamoobola
The Zambia National Union of Teachers -ZNUT- in Southern Province has urged the government to improve the conditions of service for teachers across the country.
ZNUT Provincial Organizing Secretary MWANAKALIMA HAGONKA has told ZNBC news in an interview that most teachers are highly indebted because of the meager salaries.
Reflecting on Teachers day that falls today, Mr. HAGONKA said some teachers are living and teaching in grass thatched schools which should not be the case.
He says there is need to take good care of teachers because they are the engine of the nation.
And Mr. HAGONKA has implored the government to recruit at least ten thousand teachers to reduce the teacher pupil ratio and improve the quality of education.
He said the current ratio is at 80 to One hundred pupils to one teacher, a situation that has not worked well for both teachers and pupils as it does not promote quality education.
