TIMBER EXPORT PERMITS SUBJECT TO QUANTITY INSPECTION
By Etambuyu Katota-
Green Economy and Environment Minister COLLINS NZOVU says timber export permits will only be given out after inspections on quantities are made.
Mr. NZOVU says it has been observed that timber exporters and merchants have a tendency of applying for huge volumes for exports on their permits and yet have very small quantities.
He says the issuance of permits without inspections is fueling illegal activities in the timber industry.
Mr. NZOVU says the law will be strictly followed to ensure government is able to monitor activities.
He says illegal activities in the industry are still on the increase and this is why elaborate systems are being formulated to ensure the country benefits from all required taxes.
Mr. NZOVU was speaking in an interview with ZNBC News.
Government in April announced the recommencement of the issuance of the timber export permits after a successful audit process was conducted on the operations of the forestry department.
