Travel Alert: “Don’t Travel to South Africa”
Government has cautioned truck and bus drivers to avoid traveling to South Africa until the security situation in that country is restored.
Transport and Communications Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya has further urged transporters who own trucks and buses in South Africa to currently park them in safe and secure designated places, as recommended by the authorities in that country.
Mr Kafwaya says government will continue to engage the Government of South Africa in order to ensure that security measures are put in place, in order to safeguard the lives of all Zambian truck drivers.
The Minister was commenting in relation to the security alert issued by the Zambian High Commission in South Africa dated August, 26th 2019 and also from the Road Freight Association regarding the security situation for foreign truck drivers plying on the South African roads.
Meanwhile, Government says it is doing everything possible to communicate with the South African authorities over the current spate of attacks on foreign nationals in that country.
Information and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary, Chanda Kasolo says the current happenings in South African are unfortunate and barbaric.
Mr Kasolo says South African Authorities need to take charge of the situation.
He told ZNBC News in an interview that if that country does NOT need foreigners there is a better way of removing them.
And Mr Kasolo has sent a message of good will and recovery to the Zambian National that has been attacked in South Africa.
The Permanent Secretary has wished Daniel Lupiya a quick recovery and urged him to return to Zambia.
President Edgar Lungu said he will engage his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa over attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa.
President Lungu said the situation is serious and something should be done.
He said Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa Jackson Miti has informed him that the situation is not good for foreigners in that country.
President Lungu told ZNBC News that General Miti further informed him that Ambassadors from the SADC region in South Africa will meet to resolve the problem.
