UNIVERSITIES CHALLENGED TO OFFER FASHION DESIGN
By Moombe Hamoboola
A 26-year old Livingstone-based fashion designer has urged universities in Zambia to start offering fashion designing among other talent oriented courses such as music.
STACEY KAMWI who is a banker by profession and a fashion designer by passion says the fashion industry has grown and employed many people in the western world where it is taken seriously.
Ms. KAMWI says most of the institutions offering fashion designing are small, a situation that discourages school leavers to venture into such professions.
And Ms. KAMWI is urging parents to encourage and support their children to achieve their dreams even if it is outside the white collar job bracket.
She says there are great career opportunities outside the white collar job bracket that the youth can venture into such as fashion designing, music and art.
Ms KAMWI says most talented children have their dreams shattered before they are fully developed because their parents and society have specific expectations of what makes a good career.
She has also urged the government to widen the scope of fields where youths can access empowerment funds.
Ms KAMWI says skill and talent based industries will never grow in Zambia if three quarters of those who access government funds are drawn from prioritized sectors such as agriculture.
