VEEP LAUNCHES CHONGWE WATER RETICULATION PROJECT
By Brian Mwale
Vice President Inonge Wina has launched a 23-million-kwacha water reticulation project in Chongwe, aimed at increasing access to water which has been a challenge for over 20 years.
Mrs. Wina says government has managed to deliver its promises of improving access to clean water in the district.
She says government is proud that its promises are coming to life and peoples’ needs are being met.
Launching the project in Chongwe today, Mrs. Wina also applauded Senior Chief Nkomeshya Mukamambo the second for her commitment to working with government on the project.
The Vice President also commended key stakeholders from the Ministry of Water Development and Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation company among others for closely working together in delivering the project.
Mrs. Wina however reminded Chongwe residents on the need to safeguard the water infrastructure because they are the primary beneficiaries who must monitor it against vandalism so as not to reverse gains made.
The Vice President also tasked the area MP, Mayor and council to support the utility company in effective operations while advising consumers to also pay for the service provision.
And Water Development Minister Raphael Nakachinda said the launch of the project is a clear demonstration of government’s commitment to pro-poor policies as it will increase access to water, health and sanitation for the people.
Mr. Nakachinda further noted that the dividends of the project have already been experienced as seen with the reduction of water borne diseases in the area.
The Minister said government has made strides in the water sector countrywide, with 72 percent of citizens now having access to water supply from 64 percent about four years ago.
And, Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo said government has been working closely with Chongwe council and the Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation company to ensure that the project is effectively implemented.
And Chongwe Member of Parliament Japhen Mwakalombe said the water story for Chongwe residents was quite sad as women suffered on their trips to collect water.
And in her vote of thanks Chieftainess Nkomeshya thanked government for the project, saying her prayers have been answered.
