WANCHINGA BEMOANS PROLIFERATION OF UNIONS
By Michael Kaumba
General Education Minister Dennis Wanchinga has bemoaned the proliferation of teacher unions under his ministry saying the development is retrogressive.
Dr. Wanchinga says some unions are only interested in advancing their personal agendas at the expense of teachers’ welfare.
The Minister has wondered why there are six teacher unions representing the interests of teachers when other sectors have few.
Speaking when he addressed teachers in Mwense district, Dr. Wanchinga said although teachers have the right to belong to organisations of their choice, the high number of unions is not helping them.
And Mwense District Education Board Secretary Sabena Mwansa commended head teachers for adhering to Covid-19 regulations following the resumption of classes in the district during the pandemic.
At the same occasion Mwense Acting District Commissioner Benson Matipa encouraged teachers to continue with government’s development agenda.
