An invasive species of weeds has blocked waterways used by residents on the KAFUE river islands in MAZABUKA’s SHIMUNGALU area cutting them off from the mainland.
The residents on the Islands are unable to access social and health services in MAZABUKA District.
And residents told ZNBC News from the mainland in MAZABUKA that want authorities to quickly find ways of getting rid of the weeds.
And MAZABUKA District Commissioner OLIVER MULOMBA has urged the Zambian Environmental Management Agency -ZEMA- to find a solution to the problem of weeds on the KAFUE River.
And ZEMA Principal Inspector Natural Resources RODWELL CHANDIPO said investigations conducted so far reveal that the growth of the weeds is due to pollution in the area.
