ZAMBIA, ZIMBABWE LAUNCH SWMP
Zambia and Zimbabwe have launched the Sustainable Wildlife Management project meant to contribute to the management of resilient wildlife species and to identify innovative approaches to address human wildlife conflict.
The launch was graced by Ministry of Tourism, Permanent Secretary, Howard Sikwela and his Zimbabwean counterpart, Munesu Munodawafa at a ceremony held in Victoria Falls Town, Zimbabwe.
And Reverend Sikwela said his ministry has taken keen interest in community game ranches as tasked by President Edgar Lungu to ensure the promotion of improved livelihoods of local communities while protecting wildlife.
He said the Sustainable Wildlife Management project is expected to contribute to the livelihoods of local communities while reducing human animal conflicts.
The project is being implemented with the support of the African Caribbean and Pacific Group of States, European Union, Food and Agriculture Organisation, Center for International Forest Research, French Agricultural Research Center for International development and Wildlife Conservation Society.
Meanwhile, Mr. Munodawafa said the two countries’ tourism industries are anchored on the preservation of wildlife.
He further noted that the wildlife resources are a treasure that should be preserved for future generations.
And European Union Head of Sector Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Philippe Mayaux said the EU believes conservation of wildlife resources is also a development issue.
Mr. Mayaux said the EU has strong interest in the project to promote sustainable development.
