
Zambia, Zimbabwe Radiation Scientists Hold Meeting
By Mercy Ngoma-Scientists from the Radiation Protection Authority of Zambia and the Radiation Protection Authority of Zimbabwe are meeting in Livingstone to develop a harmonised system of accountancy, control and transporting of radioactive materials.
Radiation Protection Authority- Zambia Board Chairperson, Adrian Maleya has called on the two countries to increase their capacities in the monitoring and regulation of transportation of uranium ore concentrates and other radioactive materials to protect th
public and the environment.
Dr Maleya says despite the beneficial uses of radioactive and nuclear materials, the substances are potentially harmful to human health and the environment.
He further said radioactive and nuclear materials can pose a threat to public safety if found or used by persons with malicious intentions.
The five-day training sponsored by the European Union is meant to equip participants from Zambia and Zimbabwe with knowledge on the proposed Web-system to enhance safety and security during the transportation of radioactive materials.
