Minister of Justice Given Lubinda says Zambia’s stance to uphold the death penalty is a decision made by Zambians.
Mr Lubinda says the death penalty has been retained in the Zambian constitution, following submissions by the majority of Zambians through the 2011 to 2016 Constitution review processes.
He however says even though the death penalty is maintained by law, no execution has been effected in Zambia since 1997.
Mr Lubinda says Zambia has also resolved to support the United Nations resolution to establish a global moratorium on the death penalty.
The Justice Minister was speaking at a joint press briefing with members of the European Union at the EU offices in Lusaka.
This was at the commemoration of the World Day against the Death Penalty, which falls today.
And EU Head of Delegation ambassador, Alessandro Mariani said the EU maintains its position against the death penalty.
Ambassador Mariani also commended the sound dialogue that the EU has had with the government.
