Young Prison Leopards Football team are the champions of this year’s Sydney Mushanga Independence Sports tournament.
The tournament was hosted at Indeni community grounds in Makululu compound in Kabwe.
The event’s 4th edition which was graced by Sports minister Moses Mawere, saw Young Leopards silence Mulungushi Stars 4-2 on post-match penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time.
Hundreds of Makululu residents watched the final where champions Young Leopards walked away with a set of jerseys plus a trophy while Young Kabwe Youth Soccer Academy finished 3rd after a narrow win over Ulemu Raising Stars in the play offs.
Speaking at the tournament, Central Province Minister and Bwacha Constituency Member of Parliament Sydney Mushanga says the tournament has attracted 24 teams.
Mushanga thanked the Chinese Embassy for a 25 thousand kwacha cash donation as well as the ZNS Commandant for providing 5 sets of jerseys given to the last 8 teams.
And Mawere observed that government has over the years provided an enabling environment and policy to help organizations and individuals involved in promoting sports in the country.
Meanwhile, in the second day of the Barclays cup quarter-finals, Green Buffaloes is currently taking on Green Eagles while Power Dynamos will take on Might Mufulira wanderers at 15hrs.
Yesterday, Zesco United was booted out of the tournament after losing to Nkana by two goals to one while Zanaco also kissed good bye to the tournament with a two-one loss at the hand of Young Green Buffaloes.
