The Road Development Agency -RDA- has released 1.2 million Kwacha to Muchinga Province for emergency road repairs on the Great North Road.
Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary Jobbicks Kalumba says the funds will enable RDA work on the portions of the Great North Road on the stretch between Lavushimanda and Nakonde districts.
Dr. Kalumba disclosed this in Chinsali shortly after inspecting emergency repair works at Vitondo Bridge.
Over 200 vehicles including buses, fuel tankers and trucks were yesterday marooned at Vitondo Bridge after the portion of the Road became impassable.
It took over two hours for a combined team of RDA and Zambia National Service -ZNS- officers to work on the portion of the road to make it passable.
The Permanent Secretary said RDA and ZNS officers have managed to create another by-pass near Lukulu River Bridge to allow smooth flow of traffic.
Meanwhile, Dr. Kalumba is happy that the two contractors engaged by the government to work on the stretch between Chinsali and Nakonde districts, have started mobilising.
China Railway Seventh Group has been engaged to work on the 100 kilometre stretch between Isoka and Nakonde while China State has been contracted to work on 103 kilometres stretch between Isoka and Chinsali.
Dr. Kalumba who visited China State camp site in Chinsali, said he is happy that contractors are already mobilising in readiness to start works after the rains.
And China State General Foreman Cao Yapin said his company has made progress in setting up a camp for its workers and engineers for the project.
