Northern Province Youth Development Officer Felix Lengwe has cautioned young people in the region against abusing government empowerment funds.
Speaking to ZANIS in an interview in Kasama, Mr. Lengwe said it is unfortunate that some of the youth cooperatives are unable to pay back loans given to them by government.
He disclosed that the repayment of loans among youths in the province who benefited from the fund is very poor.
Mr. Lengwe observed that the youth need to embrace a culture of proper financial management as this is crucial in making their businesses sustainable.
He said the purpose of the revolving funds is to give the youth an opportunity to be entrepreneurs and reduce dependency on government employment.
Mr. Lengwe however noted that there is need for the ministry to come up with a legal framework in the operational guidelines of the funds.
Mr LengwE said the frame work will help in regulating repayments of the funds.
The Auditor General’s report has revealed that the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development failed to recover over 40 million Kwacha from the 1,450 youth groups that benefited from the Youth Development Fund -YDF-between 2012 and 2016.
