The Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) has applauded government decision to compel manufacturing and mining firms to move heavy goods via rail.
TAZARA Chief Executive Officer Bruno Ching’andu says the firm has sourced five locomotives in anticipation of an increase in traffic following the introduction of statutory instrument by Minister of Transport Brian Mushimba.
Mr Ching’andu told ZNBC news in an interview that the locomotives have been sourced on lease from a South African company.
He also said the company efficiently improved and that it can move goods between Zambia and Tanzania within five days.
Mr. Ching’andu says unlike trains, trucks take many days at border points trying to clear goods.
He said the company revenue is expected to improve going by the inquiries the rail firm has received since the announcement of the Statutory instrument.
