The Turkish Co-operation and Co-ordination Agency-TIKA- has pledged to support Zambian local authorities with technical training and capacity building in solid waste management.
The pledge was made by TIKA Head of Department for International Affairs and Partnerships Mehmet Yilmaz during a meeting with Charge d’ Affaires of Zambia in Turkey, Bwalya Nondo in Ankara.
Dr. Yilmaz said Zambia is among African countries to benefit from technical training and capacity building programme in waste management scheduled for the first quarter of next year.
He said TIKA had prioritized support to countries like Zambia where the Turkish development co-operation agency is yet to establish country offices.
And Mr. Nondo said solid waste is a serious threat to the environment and a hazard to human health.
He stressed the need to give waste management a business dimension through investment in the recycling industry.
